Twenty-five

“WHERE ARE THE DAMNED lights?” Mitchum said as they approached the skyscraper.

“Building engineers said that there is an open circuit feeding the garage. Most likely it was chewed up by the Piiklone,” Sam said. “Tommy, I need you to take lead, give Defma to Derek.”

Tommy pulled the strap over his head, handed the instrument to Derek and started explaining the procedures.

“No need, Tommy, I read over the instruction manual before we left the choppers. I got it.”

He grinned and nodded. Leaving his M-26 slung over his back, he turned to face the building, grabbed the Plasma Pulse Hand Cannon, and turned on the charging system on stun. He stepped into the darkness of the garage entrance and switched on the helmet night-observation device.

A PPHC shoots a sphere of pure plasma energy. Inside the sphere is a high electrical charge that is released upon impact. There are three levels: blue, yellow, and red. Blue will stun, yellow will cause unconsciousness, and red is the killing hit. The killing radius is ten feet.

Kesteele turned to his men. “Coop, set up transceiver relays on each parking level so that I can communicate with command. Activate PPHCs, and charge to stun. Those of you who have flamethrowers, have them ready. Face shields down. I want a ten-yard spacing between the two squads and squad members spread out in twos.”

Sam grasped Feliks’s hand and gently slung him around his back where he could hang on to Sam’s neck and look over his shoulder. “Feliks, be sure to let me know if you sense anything. Okay Tommy, let’s go.”

They passed the gate shack in two columns and vigilantly moved down to the first sublevel that was only half-filled with cars. They approached the first level below grade where cars were jammed on the ramp. They were abandoned. Tommy looked back at Kesteele. “That gas leak scare did the trick. Must’ve been a panic trying to get out.”

“Fortunately there were no injuries reported. Anything showing on Defma?”

“Nothing,” Derek said.

The team moved down to the next sublevel. They scrutinized the next ramp and open areas between decks for any Piiklone activity. They crawled over the hoods of cars and made their way down to the bottom level. There they saw a garage filled with cars unable to make it out. It was unsettling that the cars could provide the perfect cover for the Piiklone.

“Defma is still straight-lining,” Derek said.

Tommy walked back and looked over his shoulder at the instrument. “Did you try varying the scanning sensor sensitivity to X-ten?”

“Yeah, and I boosted the gain on the magnetometer from plus three to plus nine. It might be that their metal exoskeletons are so small that it isn’t picking up any sensory signals.”

“You might be right, but the magnetometer was calibrated to the Piiklone’s energy frequency. You’d think we’d get some kind of reading.”

As the team approached the ramp, they halted and switched their helmet NODs to the next-higher setting to compensate for the darkness. Tommy noticed that several other cars had bottled up the ones in the parking area.
